Contact Energy's existing office is located at the main arterial junction of Melling Road and High Street, Lower Hutt. ArcHaus Architects Ltd provided a proposal for the development of three neighbouring sites, which form the basis of a total four phase development comprising 3000m2 of retail and 8000m2 of office space.
Care has been taken to allow each stage of the development to read slightly differently, while maintaining a coherent unity. Strong vertical elements are used to break up the large horizontal forms of the concrete. Steel mesh verandas and painted fibre cement cladding forms the roof parapet above.
Louvres are utilised on the northern facades, both as a method of sun shading and as a screening device between the nearby adjacent properties. Colours have been kept relatively neutral to minimise visual impact to neighbouring properties.
